Laptop buying guide for mechanical engineering students
The following are the specs or buying tips you must consider before buying any laptop for yourself.
1. Size and weight.
Being a mechanical student, we have to go from one class to another. From class to lab, or lab to the workshop, a student doesn’t sit at the same place the whole time in college.
So it is good to have a laptop small and compact so that it fits your backpack as well as be light in weight so that it would be less burden carrying around.
So an ideal size and weight would be a 14”inch screen size laptop with around 1.5kg weight.
2. Display.
It is the place where you will be staring all the time using your laptop and for a mechanical engineering student when using designing and modeling software color accuracy is quite important.
Also, when watching videos, movies, or online lectures, a good display is necessary.
A look for at least a full HD IPS display. An OLED or QLED display is good but is expensive. Don’t opt for a TN or VA panel as they have terrible viewing angles and don’t have good color reproduction.

3.RAM.
As mechanical students, we come across heavy-weight software like Autocad inventor, Ansys, Solidworks, Catia, etc which require a good amount of power.
So look for a minimum of 8GB ram. Although we recommend 16GB ram to be a little future-proof. If not, you can check out a laptop that you can upgrade to 16GB later on.
4.Processor
Intel or AMD you can opt for any brand you want but, the processor must have 4 or more cores and the boost speed must be above 3.8 GHz at least.
The more the cores and the faster the speed of the core, the better is the processor.
On a budget go for 4 cores and if you can afford you can opt for 6 or 8 cores according to your workload. If you are dealing with assemblies with around 100+ parts in 3D modeling, then you must opt for 8 cores minimum.
5.Graphics.
All that you see on your screen is due to the graphics card. Nowadays many laptops come with integrated graphics but try avoiding them. Opt for a dedicated graphics card as it would boost the performance.
Look for at least a 2GB dedicated graphic card. However, nowadays 4GB has become the baseline.
The minimum we recommend is at least 4 GB dedicated graphics card of Nvidia 1650 or 1650ti.

List of laptops for mechanical engineering students
Given below is the list of the laptops for mechanical engineering students in descending order of their price:
You might be thinking after reading this that why I’ve included gaming laptops extensively in the list.
The reason is that I have preferred performance while making this list so that you can complete your work smoothly.
The ultrabooks are usually light in weight. But a disadvantage is that they come with a very basic graphic card i.e MX 350 or MX 450 for the same price as that of the gaming laptop.

My review of using this laptop
At the time of writing this review, it’s been quite some time since me using this laptop for my day-to-day activities. So by this time I’ve come to know about its advantages and limitations.
The specs of this laptop are quite promising and they do deliver good performance. In my use case, I’ve never come across a lag, the laptop feels buttery smooth. I had 10-15 chrome tabs and Asphalt 9 along with other desktop apps open, still no lag at all.
Talking about cooling, the laptop runs quite cool thanks to its 2 fans as well as loads of fairly sized exhaust vents.
The other thing which I noticed is that this laptop has really good speakers. These are top-firing speakers, placed above the keyboard with an eye-catching design. Also, these speakers are tuned by B&O.

Since I’m no gaming guy, therefore I do not play games although the laptop is fully capable. But I’m sure it would handle today’s modern games. (You can check out youtube for gaming & benchmark tests if gaming is your priority)
The display of the laptop depends on what are you going to use it for. For me, designing graphics for this site as well as other works that require color accuracy, the color isn’t accurate. The colors are not accurate therefore I won’t recommend it if you are into graphics or things that require good color accuracy.
On the other hand, gamers would love the display as it comes with a 144hz refresh rate. Also, the backlit keyboard adds to the thrill.
While attending online lectures, I was surprised by its microphone quality. The microphone only picked up my voice very clearly even though there were background noises. However, the webcam quality was average.
The battery life of this laptop highly depends on how you use it. The day I got the laptop, it was on performance mode with medium brightness and backlit off, I was getting around 2-3 hrs. And when I played Asphalt 8 on it with the highest settings and 144hz on, the battery was almost dead.
However, when I went to the setting and changed it from ‘performance’ mode to ‘battery saver mode’ and with normal web browsing, MS office, etc. I was getting around 5-6 hrs+ battery life
The typing experience was good for me and all of this is written using this laptop.
